Dental Crowns Q & A

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a restorative option that covers a decayed or damaged tooth. Custom crowns are created using durable, tooth-colored material to resemble your natural teeth and ensure a tight, comfortable fit over your tooth.

Why would I need a crown?

A crown can make your natural tooth stronger when you need a large filling but don’t have enough tooth surface to maintain it.

Your Pleasant Family Dentistry provider may also recommend a crown for other reasons, including:

  • Attaching a dental bridge
  • Preventing breakage of a weak tooth
  • Covering a discolored or poorly shaped tooth
  • Protecting a dental implant

Once the crown is in place, it functions like a normal tooth, allowing you to chew food and speak comfortably.

What happens when I get a dental crown?

Pleasant Family Dentistry uses CEREC digital dentistry to take digital impressions of your teeth and gather the necessary information to make your custom same-day crown in-house.

Once the crown is ready for placement, you come back for another appointment. To ensure a secure fit for your dental crown, your Pleasant Family Dentistry dentist must prepare your natural tooth for the restoration. They use a local anesthetic to numb the tissue around the affected tooth before shaving the tooth down to make room for the crown.

The new crown fits over your natural tooth and is held into place with a safe, durable dental cement. With proper care, your new crown can last for many years.

What if my crown comes off?

In the event your crown comes off, your Pleasant Family Dentistry provider may be able to replace it with new cement, rather than having to make a new one.

Keep the crown in a safe place and contact the office for an appointment. Your dentist can reattach the crown during your visit if it’s still in good condition and free of damage or breaks.
