Invisalign Q & A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an incredibly modern alternative to traditional metal braces that quickly and effectively fixes improperly aligned teeth and jaws. Treatment with Invisalign involves wearing a series of clear, plastic aligners that fit snugly over your teeth and gradually move them into a better alignment.

Is Invisalign right for me?

Invisalign is highly effective in treating minor to moderate dental misalignments and is best suited for patients with healthy teeth and gums. Invisalign can fix a number of orthodontic conditions, including:

  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Open bite
  • Gap teeth
  • Crowded teeth

Invisalign is also frequently used for improving the positioning of teeth that are only slightly or cosmetically misaligned.

Pleasant Family Dentistry also uses Invisalign prior to orthognathic jaw surgery, which can make the procedure easier and can fit aligners prior to ligation surgery, enabling a simpler attachment for the oral surgeon.

How does treatment with Invisalign work?

Your Invisalign treatment at Pleasant Family Dentistry starts with creating a digital model of your teeth and their alignment. Your provider does this by making an impression of your bite or taking a series of digital photos with an intraoral camera.

The impression or photos are then sent off to a lab that maps out a series of steps or alignment points between your current smile and your dream smile.

These alignment points are then turned into a series of customized retainers that fit snugly over your teeth and exert a small amount of constant pressure that gradually shifts your teeth into proper alignment.

You take out your Invisalign aligners to eat, brush, or floss, but otherwise, you wear them all day, for at least 22 hours. Your overall treatment time will vary depending on the condition and the severity of your particular misalignment, but most patients see their final results within 12 to 18 months.

Throughout your treatment, you’ll check in with the team at Pleasant Family Dentistry in order to monitor your progress, but these appointments are much more flexible, quick, and convenient than they are with traditional metal braces.

What are the advantages of Invisalign?

As an orthodontic treatment, the Invisalign system of clear plastic aligners offers several advantages over traditional metal braces, such as:

  • No wires or brackets that tear up the insides of your cheeks
  • More comfortable and less obtrusive in your mouth
  • Less visually noticeable
  • Less invasive
  • Easier to brush and floss during treatment
  • No emergencies

Invisalign also works faster at getting your teeth into proper alignment, and the treatment requires fewer office visits than traditional metal braces do.
